Lesson Plan Development Strategies
Effective lessons must have three things at their very basic level: standards or learning outcomes, instruction or new learning in its many forms, and assessment that students met the intended goals. Teachers must plan for these features in an effective lesson plan. Effective teachers go through a process to analyze, build, and reflect upon the learning of their students. Teachers should use this process to take their lesson plans and their instruction one step further to develop components that can both deepen learning and reach all students.
In this process teachers should first analyze the needs of their students. Most schools gear learning towards standards, so consider what the standard is that needs to be addressed while considering what students already know about this standard. This may be through observations or a pre-assessment. Next, the teacher should work to design the learning. They should consider how students could best learn the standard or learn what they need to know from this lesson. As they develop the learning the teacher should contemplate how to ensure all students meet the instructional goals of the lesson. They should also work to relate the content to the lives of their students. This personalization of learning can deepen learning experiences for the learner.
As the teacher is developing the learning, there are opportunities to integrate components of deeper learning especially for diverse students. Integrating curriculum across curricular areas can help students develop deeper, more authentic learning. Developing sociocultural sensitivity in instruction can also help reach all diverse learners.
In the last steps of effective lesson planning the teacher will implement the learning and evaluate the learning. During implementation, it is imperative that the teacher measures each students’ understanding of the instructional goal. As the teacher is evaluating the learning, they should ensure that every student has met the learning goal. They should constantly be reflecting on how to anticipate students’ needs in every lesson.
In the below presentation, you will be led through the process of
developing effective lesson plans. It will also be demonstrated how to
incorporate deeper level components into lesson plans and instruction all while
following an example lesson plan.
